What has, so far in 2024, been the biggest surprise to you in technology?

The biggest surprise in AI/LLM technology so far in 2024 has been the rapid progress in making AI systems more efficient, transparent, and aligned with human values. This has been achieved through a combination of architectural innovations, such as sparse models and mixture-of-experts, and novel training approaches that prioritize interpretability and ethical considerations.

What do you expect will be announced in 2024, and by whom?

In the remaining months of 2024, I expect major some big tech companies and AI labs to announce new breakthroughs in areas such as unsupervised learning, transfer learning, and few-shot learning. These advancements will enable AI systems to learn from smaller amounts of data, adapt to new tasks more easily, and generalize their knowledge across different domains.

Which five companies should we watch in 2024, and why?

  1. Character AI - their team is extremely strong and we are expecting a lot of AI inference optimisations to come out from their work this year

  2. Mistral AI - they also have a very strong team and have been shipping models continuously for the past couple of months so we're expecting this to continue in 2024 and I'm very keen to see what they will release

  3. OpenAI - should be releasing upgrades to their state of the art multi-modal models this year as well as their text to video model SORA

  4. H Company  - very strong team and recently raised $200mn so very keen to see what they will be releasing this year

  5. FluidStack - we are the largest AI cloud in Europe and we will be scaling extremely fast this year so keep an eye out
